Studies claim that children who use the colors of the rainbow, that is, the full range of colors, are considered emotionally balanced children, achieving fluidity in their personal experiences and with the ability to face and solve problems.

Parents can also observe if there is a lack of attention and concentration, if there is a constant need to change activities, what is the child’s preference or if he/she draws with harmony, creativity and talent. All these personality traits can come to the fore with the simple art of painting.

When a child begins to draw shapes or figures, he should not be corrected or criticized. As a suggestion, you can take a piece of paper, color it and draw it next to it, showing what you know. Painting with company and calmly will create an atmosphere conducive to conversation, and the child will feel supported and loved, as their mother or father will be devoting a little time to them.

Benefits of painting

Although painting and drawing is a very simple hobby, it is one of those activities where children can gain far-reaching benefits, as it is an exercise that can help develop personality on many levels, including psychomotor and cognitive levels. In addition to all this, drawing is an activity that develops creativity and imagination.

Psychologist Sara Güilamo, director of the Psychology Department at the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (Pucmm), located in the Dominican Republic, explains that within the cognitive part of development, handling information is part of the skills needed to paint. This activity also stimulates artistic skills, with which it is possible to “stimulate the different cerebral hemispheres, offering a comprehensive view of the human being”.

At the level of psychomotor skills, Güilamo establishes that painting is effective because it involves a series of encounters between physical work and psychic processes. Therefore, it is an activity that has become recurrent in almost all preschool children, as a way to strengthen both areas in the little ones.

The children’s drawing and way of painting convey their mood and reveal their feelings, because they are telling their experiences and thoughts without meaning to. It is proven that this activity favors writing, reading, creativity, in addition to helping the child to have more self-confidence. The spontaneity with which the little ones draw a picture, combined with the use of colors, reveals to us, psychologically, what a child’s personality is like.
