Can The Use Of Electronic Devices Harm The Fetus?

Most of the electronic devices we use on a daily basis emit electromagnetic waves that reach us almost without barriers. The impact of radiation in these cases became increasingly noticeable. We live surrounded by technology and we cannot escape it, as it is found both inside and outside our homes.

Avoiding the use of electronic devices during pregnancy is not an easy thing to do, as we have to deal with them almost obligatorily. Likewise, exposure to this type of radiation is not considered as harmful as atomic radiation, for example.

Some people argue that electromagnetic or radio waves can cause some physical instability, but this is not fully proven by the scientific community. Beliefs around the possible attack on health are related to people’s overexposure to telephone antennas or high electrical voltage.

Is the fetus at risk?

Just as adults may not have any problem with the emission of electromagnetic waves from electronic devices, it is very likely that a pregnant woman will not put the fetus at risk through the use of technology. But there is still a fear about it and room for doubt, with many rumors and myths circulating all the time and scientific research dedicated to finding an answer.

It was precisely the concern with this possibility that led specialists to ask themselves if there really are reasons for having to take extra care during pregnancy. So, recent studies have focused on finding a way to demonstrate the reliability or otherwise of beliefs  about the possible harm that the use of radioelectric devices can cause to the fetus.

And in this sense, researchers have found that ionizing electromagnetic emissions are the ones that can actually be considered harmful to the human body. The main issue related to this type of emission is the chemical alteration of the tissue structure, especially gamma rays and X-rays being found.

Frequent exposure to this type of radiation can elevate the body’s temperature  and, on occasion, can lead to headaches, stress or insomnia. Although symptoms are generally mild, more recent studies have determined that perhaps  cell phone use during pregnancy can affect the child’s behavior  later on.

Studies on the effects of electronic devices on pregnancy

For a long time there was speculation about the possible damage of electronic devices on the fetus, but nothing has been clearly proven. However, a study recently found a relationship between this use and the presence of brain damage  in babies.

According to the study published by Scientific Reports, certain alterations in the fetal brain development would be related to the use of  cell phones during pregnancy. The research was carried out by a group of scientists at Yale University, USA, and used mice in the experiment.

According to the results, alterations were produced in the brain, where the main consequences were related to behavior, with anxiety and hyperactivity being the most evident. Other consequences that were in evidence were the inadequate development of neurons and memory problems.

Although the study was not conducted with humans, it is noteworthy that  in rats, the cell was the cause of symptoms of ADHD  (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) . But it also has to be considered that the organism of rats and humans have differences, leaving the results with a cloud of doubts above; therefore, it is not possible to say with absolute certainty that these problems will arise.

But despite this, prevention must be present and directed towards an awareness issue, in which a future mother prefers to avoid prolonged exposure to electronic devices. In any case, there  is no clear reason to worry,  despite the results we cited above, as cell phones are not as big as we are and rat brains are not as big as a baby’s brain.
